Coir geo textile is a natural solution to large scale soil erosion / soil
degradation. It has achieved wide acceptance all over the world. As a
natural product, Coir geo textiles are bio-degradable and environment
friendly. Studies conducted in geo-textiles have indicated that coir is
better preferred, as compared to jute or other natural materials owing to
certain characteristics like durability, wat strength, hairy surface etc.
It enables vegetation to take root on the applied area thus making the
bonding of the soil very strong. They are ideal for application on hill
slopes, road and rail embankments. |

From the above table, it
can be seen that there is a great diversity of functions when it comes
to different applications. It can be seen that most functions can be met
by the use of coir geotextiles.
| Different
applications where coir fabrics can be used in an effective
and cost efficient way are: |
|
a. Erosion treatment
b. Sub-base layer in road pavement
c. In drain works
d. Slope stability problems
e. Rail track stabilization
Coir netting for erosion treatment |

Erosion consists of
loosening, migration storm may drain out upto 250 tons per hectare of
top soil. This excessive flow of water causes rain cuts, rills and
gullies. Normally these problems are countered by sodding or turfing.
But next rainy season, the seeds and springlings get washed away because
of the limitation in time to grow deep roots. It is here that coir
netting plays an effective role. When grass seeds are sown over firmly
laid coir netting, it gives immediate protection to the soil.
With the passage of time, the roots take a firm hold and give a
permanent vegetation. The netting also regards the leaching of
fertilizers under the impact of rains. The coir netting thus serves to
hold the seeds and soil intact, effectively checking erosion during
heavy seasonal rains.
The
other benefits provided by the matting include
1) Shielding of the soil against wind & rain impact and storm
water run off, preventing rilling and gullying
2) Offering a secure condition for seed germination by acting as a
barrier against wind, rain and birds
3) Retention of the moisture by capillary storage and evaporation
control, helping seed germination and seedling growth
4) Absorption of solar radiation and maintenance of ideal
temperatures for plant growth
5) Turf reinforcement against rutting and general wear and tear. |

How to lay coir geo
textiles
1. Level the area
2. Do first seeding of grass tamp and compact surface soil.
3. Lay the geotextiles in rolls or grids in the direction of waterflow.
4. Secure top and bottom ends of the netting.
5. Peg down the netting using staples
6. Do second seeding.
7. Irrigate the slope. |
